“Lafite has a Soul, a beautiful, generous, kindly soul. Lafite turns bare earth into heaven. Lafite is harmony, a harmony between man and nature, because without our magnificent winegrowers, nothing would be accomplished.” Baron Eric de Rothschild
Many wine connoisseurs are asked along their wine journey, “What made you fall in love with wine?” For me, the answer is simple, and this quote from Château Lafite Rothschild tells the story that swirls in my soul. There is no other beverage on earth that lives and breathes and changes with the elements in earth. There is no other beverage on earth that mother nature dictates and directs, creating her perfect concoction for us to enjoy. Wine is a living organism and a product of the earth. It couldn’t and wouldn’t exist with out the harmony between the earth’s gifts and dedicated and relentless vintners.
I was honored and privileged to do a tasting of the 2000 vintage of Carruades de Lafite, the second wine from Domaines Lafite Barons De Rothschild from the Pauillac Region of France. A wine blessed from what is called a “Remarkable series of Vintages” with years, 2000, 2003, and 2005 noted as their most recent promising vintages.
The Carrudes de Lafite is a blend of 51.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 1.5% Petit Verdot with 20 months sleeping soundly in oak. The perfect outcome of an early blossom and above average temperatures across the region. The 2000 vintage is full of sunshine and health. The color is alluring and deeply beautiful with earthly deep ruby colors, reflections of the earth’s core, and lustful shades of crimson. Legs like a stripper but there is nothing cheap about this wine. Gorgeous, authentic, courageous and full figured.
A wine full of power and prestige, Thomas Jefferson, a winemaker himself wrote of his travels through
Bordeaux naming Lafite as one of the top four wines to rise to fame and notoriety for impeccable growth. Jefferson remained an avid customer of Lafite throughout his life. A wine full of history and passion. The story of Lafite twists and turns through happiness and sorrow, crisis and triumph, battles and championships; a wine with culture and heart. The full bodied delight with traces of licorice and dark fruits exemplifies the immense pride and love poured into each bottle directly from the gut of the winemakers. Finishing long and round tannins; a product from the long aging process and many years sitting and waiting for consumption.
In conclusion, The 2000 Carruades de Lafite is in its prime to be drunk right now. This wine is peaking and each sip was a rush of flavor and intensity. The fruity nature of this wine was reminiscent of a season with just the right amount of rain and harvest in the sun.
